About Phil

Phil Lockwood is a dynamic and talented musician and composer living in Morgan Hill, California, with deep roots in the Oakland jazz community. He has written, recorded, and produced original music for Bravo, SyFy, NBC, and MTV. He is a founding member of Lewiston Jazz, started the house music label Visualize Records, and played in numerous rock and punk bands in his youth.

Phil's musical journey began at a young age - singing in church, learning trumpet, and discovering a love for guitar which evolved into a passion for songwriting. He has performed in numerous musical settings, including orchestras, big bands, vocal ensembles, rock, blues, klezmer, and electronic dance music acts.

In 2016, using umbrella project, he released electronic works via the eponymous IRIS Sound System and Vespers.

For over a decade, Phil refined every aspect of his craft with Lewiston Jazz. In 2014 and 2018, the band released It’s Not Too Late and Undertow respectively. The albums were recorded at 25th Street Studios by David Lichtenstein.

In 2006, his ambient piece, Breathing In Poetry, was the basis for a modern music composition performed by the San Francisco Composer's Orchestra; and he was the sound  designer for Machine: A Fire Opera performed at the Crucible in Oakland.

Phil currently teaches and performs in the South Bay area, as well as plays trumpet with the Morgan Hill Wind Symphony and guitar in the Pacific Pop and Jazz Big Band.
